This month, multinational cloud computing corporation Oracle announced that it will acquire LogFire, a company that produces cloud-based supply chain management (SCM) software for warehouses. Oracle has worked with LogFire in the past, and now hopes to leverage their SCM expertise to create a comprehensive software suite of cloud computing applications for other companies in the shipping and logistics industry. This is the latest, but certainly not the only example of cloud computing companies working together with businesses in the shipping and logistics industry to improve the speed, efficiency and reliability of SCM enterprises.
With cloud computing applications becoming increasingly affordable and available, many shipping and logistics companies have begun using these technologies to cut costs, reduce their dependence on local databases, and streamline their operations. In 2014, a study published in SCM World outlined the ways in which the cloud can improve supply chain performance. In their conclusions, the authors of the study identified a number of key benefits that cloud computing platforms can have on the supply chain.
To begin with, cloud platforms can facilitate agile, real-time communications between different levels of the supply chain. This can help companies at each level to collaborate quickly and respond to problems more effectively. The authors of the study also found that some companies have had great success using the cloud to automate communications and improve the visibility of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) messages between different carriers in their network. Finally, cloud platforms have helped to relieve pressure on IT departments with limited resources, allowing them to focus more on monitoring and maintaining local systems and infrastructure. With such a diverse array of potential benefits, it’s only a matter of time before the cloud becomes an integral component of the global supply chain.
